Continued rent increases in Switzerland are making it difficult to find affordable housing and can create new obstacles to the integration of foreigners, especially from low-income families.
According to reports in Swiss media, including 20 Minuteen, increasing the cost of housing may deepen the division among various social groups, causing families with less financial opportunities to seek out dwellings in more distant or less wanted areas.
This situation may also affect the integration of foreign communities, as the settlement plays an important role in access to schools, labour markets, public transportation, and social networks.
Official Swiss data shows the housing market has come under added pressure. According to the Federal Home Office, the situation deteriorated during 2025 and the first half of 2026, mainly because of the increased demand and construction of new dwellings, Telegrafi broadcast.
Low – and medium – income families are among the most affected groups. In demanding areas, finding an affordable residence has become increasingly difficult.
According to Swiss authorities, between 2000 and 2024, the lease index increased by 38%, exceeding overall price and salary increases.
For Albanian diaspora families and other foreign communities, this situation could pose an additional challenge, especially for those who have just settled in Switzerland and do not yet have full financial stability.
Lack of affordable housing is not only economic but also social issues, since it can affect equal opportunities and the involvement of residents in community life.
Swiss authorities expect housing construction to increase more by 2027, however, a rapid relief of the situation is not expected./Telegraphy/
