Hoxha after Arlinda Zekit’s murder: The mechanisms for protecting women don’t work

Lawyer Valdet Hoxha has criticised the functioning of institutional mechanisms for dealing with victims of domestic violence and protecting women, following the assassination of Arlinda Zekiaj in Vitomirica of Pec.

Hoxha, invited to HINA FIVE), it has said that the institutional chain for women’s protection has never been properly built, and that the reactions of institutions have often remained only at the deklarative level.

Unfortunately, it was never built properly. I don’t believe there’s a chain break, but this chain of treatment of women’s victims and protection, unfortunately, that 99 percent of the victims are women, has not worked much more than deklaratively, like those pathetic statements in the Assembly, which is unacceptable, Hoxha has declared.

He has stressed that the problem does not lie in the lack of legal framework, as, according to him, legislation in power envisions mechanisms for protecting women and fighting gender-based violence.

It’s really sorry. It is not that there is no legal framework, since the law on protection against violence against women and gender equality envisions adequate mechanisms to control this phenomenon, but mechanisms that implement that law, and deviance strategy and action plans, are not functioning, it has indicated.

Speaking of the last case, Hoxha has said he must serve to identify failures in the institutional chain of women protection in order to prevent the repetition of such cases.

He has stressed that, besides legal and institutional mechanisms, state officials should also be guided by moral standards in exercising their duties.

The last case, which we hope to be the last, should necessarily be, if there is to be found out the cuts of this chain, but there are moral standards that would have to have state officials, Hoxha has declared.
