Rare dinosaur skeleton sold for 42m euros, price shocks auction world

A rare dinosaur skeleton has reached a staggering price at an auction in New York, selling for about 42m euros.

Fossil, known as Jody, belongs to a carnivorous dinosaur identified as Nanotyrantus, who lived in the last dinosaur period some 67 million years ago.

The skeleton was discovered in 2019 in the American state of Montana and is about 20 feet [6 m] long. According to data published by auction organizers, the specimen is approximately 70 percent, making it a fossil of special interest to researchers.

The sale took place at the popular Sothebys auction home, where the final offer significantly exceeded the initial assessment.

However, the sale has restored debate among paleontologists over the fate of rare fossils. Some scientists express concern that high – importance scientific specimens may end up in private collections, restricting access to study and display at museums.

The buyers’ identity has not been made public, while it is not yet known whether the skeleton will be accessible to the public.

This auction testifies to the intense interest in dinosaur fossils, which in addition to their scientific value, have become objects of outstanding value in the collector’s market.
