Tens of thousands of citizens, mostly students and workers, have appeared on Friday on the streets of Italy’s various cities, demanding higher wages and more powerful public services, as well as protesting the rise in cost of living and military spending.
Protests were organised within the framework of a 24-hour general strike called by the Union Union Sindacale di Base ( The USB), with demonstrations planned in more than 40 cities in the country, writes Reuters, broadcast Dukagnaj.
The demonstrations, which came after the clashes that took place earlier this month, when protesters clashed with police, looted shops and damaged property, took place mostly peacefully this Friday.
In Turin, however, the situation was tense after police used cannons to repel students and left activists who approached the safety cords protecting the Prefecture building.
In Rome a large number of protesters marched near the Colosseum, where they warned that they intended to set tents and stay throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, garbage containers were put on several roads, which protesters set on fire.
In Milan, demonstrators marched on the city’s street ring before closing the protest before Milan’s Polytechnic University.
While in Genoa, about 15 thousand portal workers, students and other protesters entered the port, joining similar protests in Europe and other parts of the world.
They opposed the use of ports to transport weapons and raised concerns about the deaths of sailors in armed conflicts, from the Gulf to the Black Sea.
A wave of protests has included other European countries, including France, Spain, Belgium and Albania. Disatisfaction is mainly associated with increasing cost of living and requirements for better economic and social conditions.
