The US State Department has approved the sale of 500 Patriot missiles. PACE-3 for Ukraine, in an agreement estimated at $2.1 billion.
According to the announcement released Friday, the purchase will be financed through the contributions of Canada, Germany and Norway, which will be channeled through the US JUMPSTART programme, as well as through national funds provided by the EU Foreign Assistance for Ukraine.
The main contractor for this sale will be the American company Lockheed Martin, Reuters writes.
Approval of the deal comes at a time when Ukraine is seeking to speed up supplies with air defence systems and rockets, due to the intensifying of Russian attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky had declared earlier this week that Kiev has been awaiting nearly a month’s US approval for supply of these missiles.
Zelensky has repeatedly asked the United States to accelerate the shipments of missiles, which are purchased by NATO allies and supplied through the programme known as PURL.
Ukraine aims to accelerate supplies before the start of winter, when the country’s energy infrastructure is expected to face increased risks from Russian attacks.
