Seven immigrants die near the Canary Islands, over 380 others saved

At least seven immigrants have lost their lives in the waters near the Spanish Canary Islands, while more than 380 have been rescued from maritime rescue services.

According to the Spanish authorities, two lifeless bodies were found on an immigrant boat that saved 132 persons, some 150 miles [150 km] from the island of Lanzarote. Five other immigrants who had died during the trip had been thrown into the sea.

Meanwhile, 250 other immigrants were rescued from the coast guard teams near the Lanzaro Islands and El Hierro. A day earlier, another 107 persons were saved off El Hierro Island, Reuters reports.

The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavius, has reacted after the tragedy, saying the Atlantic route is continuing to take lives.

The sea route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. Each year thousands of immigrants try to cross the ocean in overloaded boats, risking their lives to reach Spanish territory.

Although the number of migrants who have arrived this year is lower compared to the same period last year, during the month of October there has been a significant increase in travel, increasing pressure on waiting and emergency services on islands.
