Drivers who circulate at extremely low speeds in several segments of highways in Italy may face fines of up to 160 euros, according to a new proposal intended to improve traffic flow and avoid traffic barriers in circulation.
According to reports by the Italian legal portal éBloue News, the move will initially be implemented on six lane highways and is expected to be included in the new Italian road legislation.
The proposal envisions that in the lane located near the middle of the highway, with at least three lanes in each direction, vehicles move at minimum speeds of 100 miles [100 km] an hour.
However, this restriction will not apply in all circumstances. Exceptions are presented in cases where traffic signaling determines differently or when weather and traffic conditions require slowdown.
These include dense fog, heavy rainfall, accidents, street work, and motorcades.
Drivers who do not respect this rule, without justified reasons, may be fined between 40 and 160 euros.
The move is part of the new Road Code project, which was approved by the Council of Ministers in October and was then forwarded to Parliament. The final text is still expected to be adopted.
Otherwise, even in Italy it is currently forbidden to drive for no reason too low, if it impedes circulation or risks other traffic participants. Similar rules apply in Switzerland.
