Should you be sober before blood sugar is tested?

A cup of coffee, a cookie, or even a light morning can affect the outcome of glucose testing in the blood. So preparing before taking a sample is important, especially when it comes to measuring sober sugar.

If you are headed for the laboratory to check the glucose level, but during the morning you have had coffee or had something to eat, the result may not be appropriate to interpret as sober measurements.

This analysis requires that you avoid consuming food or calories for at least eight hours. During this period only ordinary water is permitted.

How much blood sugar should be in the morning?

According to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association ( ADA’s values in sober blood plasma are interpreted as follows:

Under 5.6 mml/L value normal.

From 5.6 to 6.9 mml/L values showing prediabets.

0 mml/L, or more, value that meets one of the diabetes diagnostic criteria.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization uses the 6.1 mml/L limit for determining sober glucose.

For this reason, interpretation of the results may vary depending on the criteria used. In individuals without symptoms, a single adult result is not enough to confirm diabetes, and a confirmation analysis is needed.

What happens if you eat before you test?

After food consumption, especially the host, glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream.

In response, the pancreas secretes insulin, the hormone that helps cells exploit glucose and maintain its balance in blood.

Consumption of bread, dough products, or sweetened coffee can cause temporary growth in glucose levels. This increase depends on the amount and composition of food, the time spent on food, and the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar.

Even a small bite can affect the necessary conditions for sober analysis. If you’ve eaten by accident, you should inform the lab staff before taking blood. In such cases, the test may be postponed, since the food outcome should not be compared to the diagnostic limits of sober glucose.

Does coffee without sugar affect results?

While many people feel that black coffee, free of sugar and milk, does not affect analysis, caffeine can affect glucose regulation in some people.

To avoid confusion, water alone is recommended before the analysis. Also, according to laboratory instructions, chewing gum, smoking, and intensive physical activity should be avoided.

People who use insulin or other drugs for diabetes should not change therapy themselves or skip meals without consulting their doctor.

What do studies on sugar grown in the morning show?

A sober adult glucose can be one of the first signs of a sugar metabolic disorder even if there are no symptoms.

A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which included 3,234 people with increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, showed the importance of early interventions.

During an average period of 2.8 years, those who improved nutrition increased physical activity and worked on lowering body weights had 58 percent less cases of diabetes compared with the group that took placebo.

The findings of the study showed that early identification of prediabetes provides opportunities to prevent or postpone the development of Type 2 diabetes.

Is the morning sugar test enough?

Not always. Some people may have normal values of sober glucose while they may have disorders of its metabolism.

For this reason the doctor may also recommend the analysis of the glyglobin (HbA1c), which reflects the average level of glucose over the last two to three months. This analysis does not require that the person be sober.

In certain cases the oral test of glucose tolerance may also be recommended ( O GTT, which helps to assess how the organism processes sugar.

A result does not always tell the whole truth

The value of glucose should be interpreted in view of age, symptoms, health history, and conditions under which analysis has been carried out.

An adult result does not necessarily mean that a person has diabetes, but a normal value in the morning does not always rule out the disorder of glucose metabolism.

Proper preparation before analysis, performance by health professionals and timely checks are important for early identification of prediabetes and diabetes.
