IKD urges full investigation into Arlinda Zekaj murder case

The IKD estimates that information made public, under which the victim had sought assistance from institutions and was treated by police as the victim of domestic violence shortly before the assassination, raises serious doubts about possible failures in protecting her life.

The organisation requires that the actions of police, Prosecution, Court, Centre for Social Affairs and other responsible mechanisms be investigated, while for any alleged violations, concrete criminal, disciplinary and administrative measures are undertaken.

The IKD has called on the Kosovo Government and Assembly to take concrete steps for the Vetting process in the justice system, stressing that waiting for this process should not hinder accountability for concrete cases.

Also, it has called for more effective measures for protecting women from domestic violence and from the Ministry of Justice a review of criminal legislation on women’s killings, including the possibility of expressing recognition of childicide.

The IKD has expressed readiness for the family of the deceased to offer free counseling and judicial representation to consider the possibility of seeking the state’s responsibility for possible violation of the right to life.
