Jorginho under suspicion of doping, risks two years of suspension from football

Former Italian national player and Flamengo midfielder Jorginho reportedly resulted positive for doping and if the results are confirmed, he faces a longer suspension.

The news was first reported by Brazilian journalist Thiago Asmar, better known as Pilhado. According to Brazilian media, samples were taken during a routine anti-doping check by CONMEBOL, ahead of the Copa Libertadore quarterfinals vs. Independent.

Still not known what substance was suspected of being found. A counteranalysis of sample B is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th.

Flamengo, reported by Radio Globo, said he had received no official announcement of possible positive results and was unaware of the planned counteranalysis. The club only confirmed that COMEBOL had conducted a routine check before the quarterfinals.

CONMEBOL did not want to comment on the case. As they explained, anti-doping procedures are confidential, so they can neither confirm nor deny the investigation.

If the charges are confirmed, disciplinary procedures against Jorginho will be initiated. Brazilian media report that suspension, depending on the substance and circumstances, could last up to two years. For a player who turns 35 in December, this could mean the end of his career.

The doubt arose prior to the second semi-final match against Estudiante, in which Jorginho played without any restrictions. Flamengo was eliminated from Copa Libertydores in that match.

Otherwise, Brazil-born player was one of Italy’s top players at winning the 2021 European Championship. During his career, he wore the fans of Naples, Chelsea, with which he won the Champions League, and Arsenal, before moving to Flamengo in 2025. /Telegraphy/
