More than 160 thousand people are expected to participate in the protests, which will take place this Saturday across Germany, according to organisers. The youth-led movement, inspired by protests in other European countries, requires improving the educational system and reducing the cost of living.
Protests come after a wave of demonstrations organised by generations Z to various European countries this year. In Serbia, student-led activism helped remove the country’s long-term leaders through ballot boxes, while protests in France have escalated into riots and plunder.
In Germany, protests are organised by the group of activists éGen Z regelt) (Generata Zer takes over) and are planned in 34 cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.
Organisers oppose mandatory military service and require more investment in education, at a time when many German youths are facing increased cost of living.
German authorities expect demonstrations, which coincide with Halloween celebrations, to take place mainly peacefully. However, they have warned of efforts by extremist groups to exploit the movement.
According to the Federal Interior Ministry, parts of Germany’s extreme left extremist scene have been involved in mobilizing support, as well as some groups associated with foreign extremist movements.
We all remember images from France robbery, houseburning, burning of police vehicles and assaulting police officials. France should not be taken as a model in this regard, said Roman Posek, the interior minister of the land of Hessen, whose capital is Frankfurt.
Meanwhile, in Berlin, several businesses along the luxury shopping boulevard Kurfürstendam have covered their windows and planned earlier closures, due to concerns about possible riots during the protests.
