From Rome to Milan, Italy in chaos of protests – 8 persons arrested

Italy is involved this Friday by mass protests in 70 cities, under a 24-hour general strike called by the USB union. According to organisers, over 1 million people participated in demonstrations, opposing increased cost of living, low wages and increased military spending.

Protests were accompanied by tensions and clashes with police in some of the main cities, including Rome, Milan, and Turin.

In the capital, demonstrators threw objects into the direction of the rule forces, set up barricades and tried to break the police cord to approach the Parliament. During protests in Rome, eight people were arrested.

Meanwhile, protesters in Milan blocked the East Tangenic for several hours, while the tangenic circulation in Bologistna was cut off and one segment of the A1 Highway for about three hours. Flooding blocks were also in Turin, while demonstrators in Genova blocked the port entrance.

In Turin, police also detained two people following incidents recorded in Castello Square. On the other hand, protest took place in Florence peacefully, with thousands of citizens participating.

The strike included the health sector, however, guaranteed minimum services and medical emergencies.

Mobilisation took place amid clashes with the Italian government, as Transport Minister Matteo Salvin had ordered the postponement of the strike. The USB Union rejected that decision and continued organising the protests.
