A work mistake at an industrial depot in Spain has led to the discovery of one of the biggest cocaine shipments in the country’s history. About 10 tons of drugs were allegedly hidden in two warehouses in the town of Águilas, in the region of Murcia.
It all started on October 30th, when a worker was moving the gym with a standing fork. During the maneuver, one of the gyms collapsed and was damaged by exposing hidden cocaine packages inside it.
After the incident, the worker left the facility, while the standing fork remained lit near the entrance of the warehouse.
Local police were initially notified of a possible accident at the workplace. However, when officials arrived at the facility, they found no one. During the search of the damaged gym, suspected packages were discovered.
The investigation later took over the Spanish Civil Guard, which identified a second depot in the same industrial area during the raids.
More than five tons of cocaine were counted in the first warehouse, while after the discovery of the second facility, the total amount was estimated at about 10 tonnes. The final weight was still expected to be confirmed.
Doubts of Albanian Criminal Organisations
According to Spanish media reports, investigators are considering the possibility that a criminal organisation of Albanian origin, suspected of trafficking cocaine from Latin America to Europe, will remain behind the burden.
The two warehouses were allegedly used for drug storage and its preparation for distribution. One of the investigative tracks is the transport of cocaine trucks to various destinations in Spain and other European countries.
The value of cargo on the black market is estimated at between 130m and 145m euros, if the projected amount is confirmed.
Until recent reports, authorities had not made public the names of suspected persons and had not been reported for arrests. The Civil Guard investigation is continuing to reveal the origin of drugs, the people behind the network and the cargo destination.
