Greenland has opened a new international airport in the town of Ilulissat, an important development aimed at making this Arctic region more accessible to tourists from around the world.
With a track of 2,200 feet [2,200 m] and a modern terminal of about 5,000 square meters, the airport allows for lowering larger aircraft and creating more direct links with international destinations.
Illoulis is considered one of Greenland’s most special tourist destinations. The city is known for its giant icebergs, impressive landscapes, and ice fjord Illullissat, which is part of the World Heritage of U. NESTO.
So far, tourists traveling from Copenhagen had to make stops and continue on their journey by smaller aircraft to reach the city. The new airport is expected to significantly facilitate the process.
According to air companies’ plans, during the summer season of 2027, there are expected to be up to six weekly flights between Copenhagen and Illullissat, while the Icelandair company also plans seasonal ties from Iceland.
The opening of the airport comes at a time when Greenland is aiming to diversify the economy and enhance the role of tourism. The number of international visitors has increased dramatically in recent years, reaching some 150,000 in 2024.
Development of tourism, however, also brings challenges. Some local representatives have voiced concerns that an enormous number of visitors could exert pressure on the fragile Arctic nature, infrastructure and local communities.
Authorities aim for the new airport to create new economic opportunities and make Greenland an even more popular destination on the international tourism map.
