Researchers Saranda Ramaj has criticised the way Kosovo Police have dealt with the Arlinda Zekaj case, saying the responsibility for what happened cannot only be dismissed by the prosecution.
In Debat Plus, Ramaj has said Arlinda was left to his family in the presence of police officers, while police, according to her, had taken the role of the taxi driver by sending him from the police station in Pec to Vitomirica.
She’s left to her family in the presence of cops and cops playing taxi driver. Arlinda did not need taxi driver from the police station in Pec to Vitomerica, which has seven minutes of distance by car, she stressed.
She has stressed that police have had the responsibility to take action because, according to her, police officials had seen tension between the suspects and the victim.
Ramaj has rejected the argument that police have no responsibility if he has not received instruction from the guardian prosecutor, saying that in such situations police officers should act even without awaiting consultation with the prosecution.
She has said the way police communicated with Arlinda tells of a systemic problem in dealing with women victims of violence by Kosovo Police.
Because they can’t tell me if I suspect he’s going to kill me, if the prosecutor shut me down or I can’t contact the prosecutor. Not exactly. Just what I’m worried about, is the conversation even now that we have a lot of characters, which is not the issue of Faruk’s personal name, but the way Faruk talks to the victim already shows that the responsibility of the Kosovo Police has the system, which deals with women’s victims. Yeah, it shows it’s a system, she declared it.
According to Ramaj, the issue concerns not only the responsibility of a police official, but the way the entire system functions in handling such cases.
