Slovenia has set up a new camera system in several segments of highways, which measure the average speed of vehicles along a specific distance, instead of recording it at just one point.
The system aims to increase traffic safety and prevent the practice of drivers who slow down only when approaching cameras, to speed up again after crossing them, the Croatian medium writes.
Unlike traditional radars, new cameras record the time when the vehicle enters the monitored segment and when it exits it. Compared to travel time with the distance traveled, the system calculates the average speed of the vehicle.
For example, if a driver crosses a segment of ten miles [10 km] per four minutes, its average speed will reach 150 miles per hour. In a segment where restriction is 130 miles [130 km] an hour, this is beyond the speed limit, no matter how slowly the vehicle has moved near the cameras.
According to the Slovenian Bureau of Metrology data, the medium-speed control system is located at four highway locations:
A1, Logatec ‘%Vrhnica, heading towards Ljubljana;
A2, Ljubljana Brododice, heading towards Kranj; A2, Grosuplje~Ivančna Gorica, towards Novo Meta;
A1, Podmij Ločica, toward Maribor, in the area of the Trojan tunnel.
Fines total 1,200 euros
Fines for speeding across Slovenia’s highways range from 40 to 1,200 euros, depending on the extent of the violation.
According to data published in the cited report, the penalties for speed exceeded are:
For over 10km/h, the fine is 40 euros;
In excess of 10 to 30 km/h, the fine is 80 euros;
In excess of 30 to 40 km/h, the fine is 160 euros;
In excess of 40 to 50km/h, the fine is 250 euros.
Even more serious fines are being presented for overcoming. Drivers exceeding the allowed border by more than 60 km/h could be fined up to 1,200 euros.
For the most serious offenses, except for cash fines, there are also punitive points.
With this system, authorities aim that speed control is not limited to just a certain moment, but to cover the entire road segment under monitoring.
