Kosovo’s Superliga makes Americans naturalised, Dominic Artis transferred to Peja

American basketball players who are naturalised by Kosovo to represent the national team are joining the Kosovo Superleagues.

The last to join this group is Dominic Artis, whose transfer Peja has formalised Thursday. The 33-year-old, who has previously played for the Kosovo Representative, will have the right to appear as a local player in the Kosovo championship.

Artis will join other naturalised American basketball players who currently play in the Superleague: Scott Bamforth, Shawn Jones, Malcolm Armstead and Divine Myles.

For Kosovo, the first naturalised basketball player was Justin Doellman, who played for representative in August and September 2016 at the time he was part of Barcelona. He never appeared in the Kosovo Superleague.

Meanwhile, Bamforth played Golden Eagle Star in the second half of the previous edition and is expected to return in January. Shawn Jones is part of Trepca for the second consecutive edition, Malcolm Armstead currently plays for Pristina, while Divine Myles is part of the Union.

The nature of these basketball players enabled them to play for Kosovo in international competitions, while Kosovo passports have opened up even more possibilities in their careers, as there are restrictions on the number of American players in many European leagues.

Kosovo clubs also benefit from this, as naturalised basketball players count as locals, enabling teams to engage another American. The competitive salaries and opportunities Kosovo basketball offers are among the factors that have drawn these players to the Superleague.
