Australian MP loses both legs after being hit by a car, suspected of deliberate assault

Australian MP Helen Haines has both lost his legs after being hit by a car outside her political office in the city of Wangaratta, Australia. Police are investigating the case as a deliberate attack.

The news was revealed by her husband, Phil Haines, who said that despite severe injuries, the MP is determined to face the long recovery process.

He described the event as terrible, but he stressed that the most important news is that his wife has survived.

The road to recovery will be long and difficult, but we know she’s a fighter, Phil Haines said, adding that the MP will have the support and love of the family during rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, suspected of deliberately hitting the MP with his vehicle, was presented to the tribunal on Wednesday for the first time.

He was arrested shortly after the incident and faces three counts: dangerous direction from the vehicle that has caused serious injuries, deliberate causing serious bodily injuries, and inflicting damage on a federal public official.

Police disclosed that other charges could be filed against him, including attempted murder.

Nugent, resident of the nearby town of Tarangue, did not seek bail and is expected to appear before the court again in February. According to judicial documents, he also faces charges of cultivation and possession of cannabis.

During the hearing, his lawyer stated that the client has mental health problems, without giving further details.
