Bloody riots in Ecuador prisons, eight prisoners killed, and 10 injured

Eight prisoners have been killed, and another 10 have been injured as a result of two separate riots erupted Thursday in Ecuador’s prisons.

According to government authority responsible for the prison system, four prisoners died in a prison in Latakunga, in the province of Kotopaxi, while four others were killed in El Inca Prison, in the capital, Quito, in the province of Picihincha.

The news was made known by the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Proliferations of Freedom and Teenagers ( SNAI), through a statement published on the X platform.

Authorities confirmed that the 10 injured persons are receiving medical treatment while identifying persons suspected of involvement in the riots.

According to SNAI, suspects are expected to be transferred to El Encuentro maximum security prison in the coastal province of Santa Elena.

Meanwhile, rule forces are conducting operations in affected prisons with the goal of restoring order and control.

Ecuador has faced widespread violence in the prison system for years, where clashes between rival criminal gangs have caused dozens of casualties in a series of massacres since 2021.
