The first US lady, Melanie Trump, has secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian forces-controlled town of Olesky, which is due to begin on October 29th, has announced on Friday the White House.
Residents of the southern Ukrainian city, which has been occupied by Russian forces since February 2022, have reported deepening the food crisis.
The two sides have agreed to temporarily halt all military action in Olesky, to enable humanitarian aid entrances and to prepare the evacuation of civilians through a certain safe corridor, the White House statement said.
This development comes at the time when Melanie Trump’s husband, President Donald Trump, is putting pressure on Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky to reach an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war that began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Melanie Trump has been active in efforts to return to their Ukrainian children’s families who were taken from Russia during the war.
The situation in Oleshky is heavy. Olishky is a town on the front line, on the brink of disaster. The remaining population in Olesky consists mainly of elderly residents, who urgently need medical care, medicine, food and clean water, has declared Melanie Trump.
According to her, the ceasefire will enable non-military teams from both countries to visit residents in their homes and coordinate transportation for those who want to evacuate to Russia or Ukraine.
An American media organisation, whose name has not been disclosed in the statement, will accompany the teams to document the process.
Meanwhile, American media Newsmax, known for its right-oriented attitudes, has reported that its cameras will have exclusive access to this effort.
