Thousands of citizens have protested in Madrid, Spain, demanding higher pensions and better living conditions for current pensioners and future generations.
Protest, organised by the pensioners’ movement and supported by several unions, including the General Code of Labour ( CGT), began near the Atocha train station and continued toward the Calle Alcalá area, near the Selwa subway station.
According to Spanish media reports, protesters demand that pensions adapt to the real level of inflation, minimum pension equals minimum wage, and measures be taken to reduce the gender gap in pensions.
Another requirement is to protect the public pension system from privatisation. Unions also require easing early retirement conditions without penalties for employees who have at least 35 years of contributions, as well as abolishing some pension reforms approved since 2011.
Protests in Madrid are taking place at a time when some European countries are facing demonstrations related to economic issues, the cost of living and government policies.
In France, authorities have planned the engagement of about 70 thousand police and gendarmes within security measures, amid tensions and protests related to political developments.
Meanwhile, security measures have increased in Italy in major cities, including Rome and Milan, where citizens are protesting the rising cost of living and government policies.
Disgusting the standard of living, public spending and social policies are remaining at the centre of civic mobilization in some European countries.
