Serbia’s former deputy prime minister, Zarko Korac, has declared President Aleksandar Vuciq could be towards the end of his political career, referring to the high turnout of citizens in the election.
According to statement reported by Croatian newspaper Jutarnji list, Korac has estimated that the long range in polling places and turnout of about 35 per cent by noon are important indicators of the political situation in the country.
The analysis of the Croatian media suggests the high exit to the polls could reflect citizens’ dissatisfaction with Vuciqi’s power and the desire for political change.
The article also raises concerns about the possibility for election results to be rejected if they are not in favour of current power. In this context, reports by Serbian pro-government media are cited as claiming irregularities in polling and threats to voters.
According to the analysis, a possible contest of the results could trigger protests and political tensions in the main cities of Serbia, including Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis.
However, so far there is no confirmed evidence that Vuciq has decided not to accept the election results.
