Eighty-five percent of Israel’s votes, Netanyah leads, but remains without majority

The preliminary results of the general elections in Israel show that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in the upper hand over his main rival, former army chief Gadi Eisencott, but neither of the political blocs has secured a majority in parliament.

With 85 per cent of the votes counted, the Lukud party of Netanyah, along with its rightist allies and the ultraorthodox Hebrew parties, is expected to win 53 seats in Knesset, the Israeli parliament, which has a total of 120 deputies.

Meanwhile, Eisenkot’s Yasar party and the other three Jewish opposition parties in its bloc are expected to secure 48 seats.

Both leaders have declared they will try to form a coalition government, while Arab-led parties can play a decisive role in determining the parliamentary majority.

These parties are expected to secure a record 19-nation record. However, almost all Jewish parties have pledged that they will not co-operate with them, making the process of forming the government more complicated.

Final Results Could Be Delayed

The vote count is not yet complete. According to preliminary data, between 430 and 480 thousand ballots remain uncounted, belonging to voters who have not voted in ordinary centres, including soldiers, diplomats and hospital patients.

Hence, the announcement of final results may take another day or two.

After confirming the results, Israeli President Isaac Herzeg will hold consultations with all political factions. He would then believe the mandate to form the government, which, according to his assessment, is most likely to ensure the necessary parliamentary support.

The process of forming government could last several weeks.

During a meeting at his residence in Jerusalem, Herzeg has praised participation of 77.7 percent in Tuesday’s elections, naming it the highest level in more than two decades.

This is an honorary symbol for Israeli society and was remarkable to see the depth of the desire for democracy in Israel, he has declared.

Herzeg has said he expects to receive official results next week, after which he will start consultations with representatives of each political faction.

We have to do everything we can, especially after yesterday, to avoid another round of choices. Therefore, I expect all who come here to have an open mind, the Israeli president has declared.

Netanyahu seeks right government, Eisencott says citizens voted for change

Despite preliminary results, both Netanyahu and Eisencott have insisted that each of them should receive the mandate to form the next ruling coalition.

Netanyah has called for the establishment of a strong national right government.

On the other hand, Eisencott has declared that citizens have extended support for change.

Initial polls, published by three Israeli televisions after the closure of the deployments, had predicted that its bloc, known as the ‘Blok of Change, would secure between 52 and 53 countries in Knesset, while the Netanyah bloc was expected to win 50 seats.

However, preliminary results of the count have changed the force report, leaving the race for the formation of the next Israeli government open.
