Erdogan warns of escalation of tensions in the Black Sea following attacks on civilian ships

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayip Erdogan, has warned that attacks on civilian ships on the Black Sea could cause further escalation of tensions in the region, stressing that such development is not in the interest of either side.

Erdogan made those statements Saturday, during a joint media conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is staying in Istanbul for a working visit.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the security situation on the Black Sea, as well as efforts to ensure safe navigation in this strategic area.

The Turkish president expressed Ankara’s readiness to contribute to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

We are willing to make every possible effort to pave the way to peace in Ukraine, Erdogan said.

He also spoke of rebuilding Ukraine after the war ended, praising the role Turkish companies may have played in this state despite the conflict launched in 2022.

The meeting between Erdogan and Zelenskyyt takes place at a time when security in the Black Sea remains one of the main issues for both countries, especially in the defence of shipping and civilian shipping.
