The results of mid-term elections in the United States may also have implications for relations between Washington and Moscow, especially if the Democrats take over from the US Congress.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on Monday that Moscow does not expect immediate changes in American foreign policy, despite the election outcome.
President Trump will remain president by the end of his mandate and implement his foreign policy, Peskov said.
The statement suggests the Kremlin awaits the continuation of the Trump administration’s policy, despite possible changes in the political balances in Congress.
According to the analysis, Trump’s foreign policy has brought about some developments that are considered in favour of Russian interests. Among them are cited the suspension of several sanctions against Russia, the decision on buying Russian oil, and the American president’s most critical attitude towards Ukrainian counterpart Voldymyr Zelensky, compared to his statements to Vladimir Putin.
However, Moscow has not yet managed to secure an agreement on ending the war in Ukraine on terms it requires.
Meanwhile, the Russian newspaper Nezavisjaya Gazeta warned that losing the control of Congress by the Republicans could place Trump in the face of numerous investigations initiated by the Democrats.
According to the paper, such a situation could make the American president difficult to implement his policies, including those related to Russia.
Thus, changing the majority in Congress may affect Trump’s political space to follow his external agenda, while the Kremlin seems to be waiting to see how the situation will develop in Washington.
