Charged for drug trafficking, 5 people executed in Saudi Arabia

Five Ethiopians were executed in Saudi Arabia after being convicted of drug trafficking. The interior ministry of the kingdom announced their execution. The latest execution brings the number of executions from the beginning of the year to 205, according to a count by French news agency AFP based on official statements.

This is the third Ethiopian execution in as many months: five were executed in June and five others in July, bringing the total to 32 this year. Most foreigners executed in Saudi Arabia were Ethiopians.

Last year, Saudi Arabia executed 356 people, a record for the mighty Gulf monarchy. The country ranks third in the world for executions between 2022 and 2025, after China and Iran, according to Amnesty International.

It has often been criticised for using the death penalty, with NGOs saying Saudi authorities resorted to the death penalty too often, rejecting efforts to portray Saudi Arabia as a modern state.

However, Riyadh argues that the death penalty is necessary to maintain public order and applies only when all legal means are exhausted.
