Dutch Eurodeput: Shame and scandal that Kosovo’s application for candidate country status has remained in EU drawers

Dutch Eurodeput Thijs Reuten has described as “turp and scandal” the fact that Kosovo’s application for membership in the European Union has remained unprosecuted.

Commenting on Kosovo’s Progress Report, Reuten said last year was difficult for the country, as much of the time was spent in political processes and elections.

Kosovo’s Progress Report outlines a difficult year, during which much time was spent on forming the new government and elections. Therefore, the report stressed that progress was limited, Reuta said in Info Magazine.

He stressed that he now expects the new government to focus on implementing reforms.

Reuten also criticised the impasse in Kosovo’s application for EU candidate status.

It is a shame and scandal that Kosovo’s EU entry application has remained in the drawer for no reason, he said.

According to the Eurodeput, there are no obstacles to EU treaties that would prevent the launch of the procedure for sending the questionnaire to Kosovo, even though some member states still do not recognise its independence.

He said he would continue to contribute to the issue, while demanding that Kosovo not give up reforms, particularly in justice and rule of law.

The more Kosovo is ready and the more reforms it makes, the more it will be in line with the EU and the better it will be for its citizens, Reuten stressed.
