Meanwhile, the International Organisation for Migration ( The United Nations IOM warns that the Atlantic route remains one of the most dangerous routes for immigrants from West Africa who aim to reach Europe.

According to the organisation, increasing controls at traditional starting points in Senegal, Morocco and Mauritan have led more and more immigrants to seek alternative routes, including starting from more south, such as Gambia.

These routes can extend sea travel to about 200 miles [2 200 km], exposing immigrants to longer stays at sea, difficult weather conditions, and the risk of drowning, dehydranation, or extinction.

The recent tragedy turns to the great dangers facing immigrants who try to cross the Atlantic Ocean into Europe.
