Ukrainian President Wolfymyr Zelensky’s planned visit to Brussels this week for high-level talks with the US, the EU and NATO, reportedly has been cancelled.
Dmytro Lytvyn, Zelensky’s communications adviser, told reporters Monday that Kiev could no longer confirm the visit, due to changes to American side plans.
Speaking to Ukrainian media on Sunday, Zelensky said the talks were scheduled for October 27th or 28th, and representatives of Ukraine, the US and the EU were expected to participate, as well as the Secretary General NATO, Mark Rutte.
Asked by Euronews concerning the planned talks, the European Commission said it remains committed to diplomatic efforts, but did not provide further details, Telegrafi conveys.
The commission continues to participate in talks and efforts with allies and partners to achieve a fair and lasting peace for Ukraine, a Commission spokesman for Euronews said.
At this stage, we have no other information to share.
The meeting in Brussels was intended to follow a series of diplomatic discussions held in Oslo last week, including talks between Zelensky and US special envoy Steve Witkoff, in which Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also participated.
According to Zelensky, security advisers of the leaders of Britain, France and Italy were included in broader discussions, as well as Björn Seibert, chief of the European Commission president’s cabinet, Ursula von der Leyeen.
Zelensky said the US later briefed its partners following talks Witkoff conducted with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg.
We got a tip from Americans; now they don’t just want to inform us, but they want to discuss security, guarantees, as well as EU involvement in a broader sense, Zelensky stressed.
They want a meeting in Brussels this week. Americans, Ukraine, the EU at the presidential level and NATO level of the Secretary General. I don’t know if there will be any other parts of this group in Brussels.
This development comes on the eve of another round of negotiations between Ukrainian, American and Russian teams, which, according to Zelensky, were scheduled for the first half of November.
