Top Serbian police chief arrested for manipulation of evidence in a murder case

The head of the Serbian Police Criminal Investigations Department, Marko Kcak, has been arrested under suspicion of abuse of office and manipulation of evidence during the investigation into a murder in Belgrade.

Bosko Sekulovic, director of the Crime Printing Service at the Criminal Investigation Directorate, has also been arrested.

According to the prosecution, the two officials allegedly violated official duties and caused damage, as well as seriously violating former Belgrade Police Chief Veselin Milic’s rights.

The case relates to investigations into the murder of a man in May, who was submitted as a member of the local mafia at a restaurant in Belgrade.

Milic had been arrested three days after the murder, under suspicion that he had not reported his crime and author, and that he had sheltered a person involved in criminal work.

After nearly two months in custody, he had filed charges against Krecak and Sekulovic, charging that they had handed over selective, incomplete and false evidence to the prosecution against him.

Kricak’s arrest comes after he was also criticised by the student movement in Serbia, which had charged him with brutality during the crackdown on protests against Aleksandar Vucic’s government.

Meanwhile, Belgrade’s chief prosecutor, Nenad Stefanovic, has declared the arrest has nothing to do with the outcome of parliamentary elections.

Kricak, 42-year-old, was established in the Serbian police hierarchy and local media had attributed his loyalty to Vucic to this advantage.
