The European Union has welcomed Kosovo President Justina Shiroka Pula’s decision to return to the Assembly for review of the law on change and completion of the Kosovo Specialised Chambers Law.
In one DeclarationThe EU recalled that it has consistently expressed deep concern over the initiative for changing this law, both before and after its approval from the Kosovo Assembly on 6 October.
The European Union stressed that it expects to consult whether discussions on this law resume in the Assembly, in line with the exchange of 2014 letters between the EU High Representative and the president of Kosovo, setting the modalities for consultation with the EU before changing legislation.
In the spirit of the 2014 exchange of letters between the EU High Representative and the president of Kosovo, who determines the modalities for consultation with the EU before changing legislation, we expect the European Union to consult if discussions resume in the Assembly. Rule of law and protection of fundamental rights, including those of victims and witnesses, remain of primary importance, the EU statement said.
The EU recalled that Kosovo’s Specialised Chambers are an independent judicial institution, founded with the decisions of the Kosovo Assembly in 2014,2015, based on a separate agreement with the European Union.
According to the statement, this institution functions within Kosovo’s judicial system and is involved in the country’s Constitution.
The current mandate and their independence should be fully respected and without reservation, the European Union stressed.
In the end, the EU expressed solidarity with all victims, survivors and their families, from all communities affected by atrocities committed during the war. /Telegraph/
