Ben-Meir reacts to Arlinda’s murder: What a disgrace to a country that struggled for freedom

The murder of Arlinda Zekiaj, who was killed with ax by her brother-in-law after repeatedly seeking protection from institutions, has prompted reactions in the international arena as well.

American International Relations Professor, analyst and expert on Western Balkan issues, Dr. Alon Ben-Meir has reacted to this case, naming it a national clip for Kosovo.

In his reaction, Ben-Meir has recalled the suffering the people of Kosovo experienced during the war and has stressed that women were among the ones who paid the highest price. He has criticised institutions for failing to protect women, linking Arlinda Zekiaj’s case to a wider problem of domestic violence.

The American professor also mentioned reports of eight women killed as a result of domestic violence this year alone, while stressing that Arlinda had sought help from authorities and had warned them that her life was in danger.

Alon Ben-Meir’s full response:

What a disgrace to a country that fought so hard for freedom!

Kosovo went through war, persecution and unimaginable suffering in its quest for freedom. Women were among the ones who paid the highest price. Yet, today women are being killed in their homes, while the very institutions they would have to protect are failing constantly.

Eight women are reportedly killed by domestic violence this year alone. Arlinda Zekaj prayed to the authorities for protection. She warned them that her life was in danger. Three days after her last appeal, she was killed with an axe by her brother – in – law simply because she was fighting to take her son back after being taken from her husband’s family.

This is a national failure. A country that fought for its freedom should never accept a reality in which women are denied the most fundamental freedom of all – the right to live.
