France has confirmed the first case of infecting a man with the Shamonda virus, which affects mainly animal livestock. The infected person died in early October, while health authorities say no public health risks have been identified.
According to a joint statement by France’s Ministry of Health and Agriculture, this is the first documented case of human infection with this virus, despite its circulation in Africa and Asia for decades.
French authorities have made it known that there was an extraordinary case, since the person who changed his life had a severely weakened immune system.
And the World Health Organization ( O BSH has estimated that the case is isolated and that, based on current information, the virus is not expected to cause widespread spread.
Based on current information and knowledge about the transmission of nearby viruses, this is an isolated case in man and is currently not expected to lead to wider distribution, O has declared BSH for Reuters.
How is the Shakespeare virus transmitted?
The Shamonda virus was first identified in Nigeria in the mid – 1960 ‘ s. It is part of the gender of Orthobunyavirus viruses and primarily affects cattle, especially cattle.
Transmission is made through the stinging of tiny bloody insects of the Culicoides gender.
The virus has been found in animals in Africa and Japan for years, and during 2026 it has also been reported in some parts of Europe.
According to the French Ministry of Agriculture, the initial hypothesis is that infection occurred through the bite of a host insect east of France, where the virus was reported to circulate on animals during spring and summer of 2026.
Authorities have launched biological, clinical and epidemiological investigations to clarify the case, with the involvement of human health experts, animals and the environment.
The World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control have also been announced for the occasion.
