France, up to 500 schools closed Monday due to student protests

DThe era in 500 schools in France could be partially or completely closed Monday, following recent clashes between police and student protesters, French Education Minister Eduard Geffray has announced.

According to him, the lesson will be partially or entirely suspended in about 400 to 500 high schools, as security conditions have not been met. Geffray also said that since the start of the protests, 24 schools have been badly burned or damaged.

Thousands of students have protested conditions in education, while protests launched last week have spread from Paris to other cities, including Montpellier, Nantes and Marseilles.

Students oppose lack of teachers, overcrowded classrooms and the poor state of school buildings, writes BBC, broadcast Klonkosova.tv.

Justice Minister Gerald Darman said on Friday that 735 out of about 3,700 schools in France were one way or another affected by violent protests.

Meanwhile, the education minister warned that the number of schools affected on Monday could be similar to Friday’s, but promised a gradual and partial return of learning.

Geffray claimed that activists, especially from the extreme left, have infiltrated the student protests and are involved in violent acts.
