Kallas warns the US: Putin’s return to G20 jeopardises normalisation of Russia’s war crimes

Vladimir Putin’s possible return at the G20 summit in Florida in December jeopardises the normalisation of Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas said on Saturday.

The failure of Russia’s return to these international forums is simply normalising war crimes that are committed daily in Ukraine, Kallas said in an interview.

She added that Russia’s war in Ukraine conflicts with the principles of the UN charter, which all of these countries around the negotiating table have signed.

Putin has not yet confirmed whether he will attend the December US summit. His last personal participation at a G20 meeting was in 2019, three years before Russia began its full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Kallas’s comments come amid growing frustration among EU countries due to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s participation in a G20 ministerial meeting in Atlanta.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was hosting the meeting, cancelled the traditional family photo after European officials refused to stay near Lavrov.

Kallas said in the interview that we do not want to stay close to Lavrov at this forum, because he is placed under international sanctions.

However, she added, Lavrov’s presence meant that úne could also immediately counter those lies from Russia.
