Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has called for concrete institutional measures to prevent violence against women, following the assassination of Arlinda Zekinaj in Vitomirica Peja.
Speaking at the Assembly session, Kurti stressed that disappointment, jealousy, and a sense of rejection cannot justify violence, underlining that no one has the right to force a person to stay in a relationship against his will.
Neither disappointment, jealousy, nor feelings of rejection make the effort to force one to endure legitimate. No one can ask for the continuation of a relationship, denying the other the right to get out of it, Kurt said.
He presented two concrete proposals, with the goal of increasing institutional responsibility and improving the protection of endangered persons.
Kurti demanded that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, through competent police structures, organise emergency reviews of high-risk active cases within 72 hours.
According to him, security measures must be documented in each case, the official responsible for conveying them and co-ordination with relevant central and local institutions. This should include police application of protective orders and response to alarms of electronic surveillance.
Meanwhile, the second proposal envisions that the Ministry of Justice, as well as in 72 hours, present a detailed report on the response or failure to respond to any link to the institutional chain in the case of Arlinda Zekit.
Through these proposals, Kurt asked to consider the way institutions have acted and identify responsibilities regarding the occasion that shocked the country.
