Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has called for disciplinary and criminal responsibility for all officials who have failed to meet legal obligations in the Arlinda Zekaj murder case.
At the meeting of the Council General of Vetevendosje Movement, Kurti has said that Zekiaj’s case has highlighted the failure of institutional mechanisms for women’s protection, despite her having denounced the violence and sought protection.
The murder of Arlinda Zekaj has once again faced us with a serious truth, that a woman can follow all the ways the law can see, denouncing violence, seeking protection, even warning in writing that life is at stake, and still end up killed, Kurti has said, reports RTKlive.
He has stressed that responsibility will be sought for any official who failed to perform the task. Each one responsible and each responsibility of each link should be investigated. Anyone who has neglected his job or committed violations of legal obligations should give responsibility and face disciplinary and criminal measures has declared Kurti.
The head of government has also spoken of the patriarchal mentality that he has described as a deeper social problem that affects violence against women.
The murder of Arlinda also confronted us with a deeper social problem: a patriarchal mentality that still views the woman as property or object on which the husband can exercise power and power, which her independence views as disobedience and the decision to flee from a relationship like breaking male authority, he said.
Kurti has stressed that changing this mentality requires family engagement, schools, institutions and political organisation.
He has warned of reviewing educational curriculums, from pre-school education to other educational levels, in order for equality, respect, personal autonomy and resolution of conflicts without violence to be learned from childhood.
We can’t keep teaching girls to be humble and patient, and boys to be dominant. These inherited roles should be considered courageously, both in school textbooks and in the way we educate our children, Kurti has declared.
He has added that the emancipation of society also relates to the economic independence of women, property rights, equal employment opportunities and the sharing of responsibilities within the family.
The gender equality must fight social inequality and it should be witnessed in the decisions we make, in the policies we follow and the way we protect women when their lives are threatened, Kurti said.
