Lionel Messi holds the record for mostly winning Golden Top, with four triumphs from 2009 to 2012. However, the first footballer to win this prize in three successive editions was French Michel Platini.
Platini won the prize in 1983, 1984, and 1985, becoming the first player to achieve three consecutive triumphs. In 1984, he won the award after leading France to the title of European champion.
The Platinia record later surpassed Lionel Mess, who won the Golden Top four times in a row from 2009 to 2012.
Besides Messes and Platini, several other footballers have managed to win the prize in two successive editions, among them Johann Cruyff, Kevin Keegan, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Marco van Basten and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The middle has won the Golden Land eight times, while Cristiano Ronaldo has five such trophies. General career triumphs are a record by themselves and differ from the number of successive victories.
