Parliamentary probe into Arlinda Zekaj assassination begins

Commission Chairman Burim Ramadani has stated that the work of this mechanism should be based on evidence and concrete facts, demanding that the process not turn into political clashes.

This commission is not a farce, it is a commission that will not make a political report, but will report on fact-based basis, Ramadani has declared.

He announced that the commission’s work will take place in three phases: collection of evidence, assessment of materials and preparation of the final report.

Ramadani also stressed that institutions should bear responsibility for the protection of citizens, underlining that no woman should remain without protection after addressing state bodies for assistance.

Even the Commission’s deputy chairman, Adnan Rrustemi, pledged that the investigation would be conducted with professionalism and responsibility, including verification of each action and non-action of responsible institutions.

To investigate, verify in detail any action, nonaction, failure to fulfill the legal obligations of responsible institutions, Rrustemi has said.

Meanwhile, PDK deputy Besa Kabashi Ramaj stressed the responsibility of all institutional levels, arguing that accountability should not be limited to officials who have directly addressed the case.

State responsibility does not begin when a woman is killed, but when she seeks protection, Kabashi Ramaj has been expressed.

It announced that by Wednesday the Commission’s action plan will be submitted in order for the process to develop in an organised manner and as soon as possible.

Even LDK deputy Doarsa Kica Jeleli stressed the burden of responsibility that members of this commission have, recalling that the case requires serious commitment.

The late Arlinda said everything we can say today and ours is to work hard on this investigative commission, Kica Jeleli said.

The commission consists of 11 members and has mandated up to six months to investigate institutional responsibility in the Arlinda Zekiaj case, as well as dealing with domestic violence against women and children.

We remember that the Kosovo Assembly founded this commission on October 29th, with 90 votes for.

Arlinda Zekaj was killed on October 25th in Vitomirica, Pec. Just three days before the murder, she had sent a letter to institutions, warning that her life was in danger.

Parliamentary investigation is expected to address not only the circumstances of this case but also the institutional responsibilities and possible shortcomings in the system of protecting victims of domestic violence.
