US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Wtkoff, has indicated that talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg have been constructive and that negotiations will continue within the framework of efforts to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Witkoff, who was accompanied by Jared Kouchner, Trump’s son-in-law, said that meetings have been held during visits to Oslo and St Petersburg with representatives of Russia, Ukraine and European countries, with the aim of advancing the American president’s efforts to end the war.
According to him, the meeting with Putin focused on continuing progress achieved during talks in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as discussing a possible framework for the peace agreement.
Witkoff also thanked the Russian president for the release of US national Stephen Kubard, who, according to him, could also return to his family.
He stressed that, although much work remains to be done, the Trump administration is committed to ending the war and achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace.
According to Witkoff, such an agreement should ensure security and prosperity for future generations.
Meanwhile, the final round of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States was held in February 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland. These talks followed two rounds held in Abu Dhabi, in January and February of the same year.
