UN Secretary General’s Special Representative and UN Chief UNMIK, Peter Due, has strongly condemned the assassination of Arlinda Zekiaj in Vitomirica, Peja, on Sunday evening.
In a reaction published Monday, Due has expressed sincere condolences to the victim’s family and relatives, stressing the urgent need to combat gender-based violence.
This brutal murder, the second of a woman in Kosovo in just over two weeks and eight this year, highlights the devastating consequences of gender-based violence and the urgent need to take seriously any calls for help. Violence against women should never be tolerated, Due has declared.
Chief UNMIK has called for full investigation of the case and for those responsible to be brought to justice, in line with rule of law.
He has stressed that preventing violence against women and girls is the common responsibility of institutions and society, underlining the importance of providing timely access to effective defence and support services.
Also, Due has highlighted the need to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, promote equality and mutual respect, and strengthen preventive measures through awareness and objective education.
Arlinda Zekiaj’s murder has prompted numerous reactions and calls for institutional accountability, while the case has turned to attention the need for more effective protection of women reporting violence and seeking assistance.
