Steinmeier: Xi Jinping opposes a trilateral summit of China- US-Russian

Steinmeier announced that he had raised the issue during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday.

According to him, though leaders of the three countries are expected to meet at the upcoming Asia-Peace Economic Co-operation summit ( The APEC, which will be held in Shenzhen, Xi’s response showed Ukraine will not be part of the discussions.

From his perspective, there is absolutely no preparation for a summit on Ukraine that would include the United States, Russia and China, the German president said.

He added that Xi had explicitly stressed that it is about a European conflict, in negotiations for which Europeans themselves should participate.

Steinmeier indicated when he proposed the possibility of organising a summit.

The statements come at a time when reports of the possibility of a trilateral meeting under the APEC conference have increased in mid-November.

The idea for such a meeting was proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss issues related to nuclear disarmament.

American President Donald Trump has expressed himself openly to this possibility, stating that other issues, including the war in Ukraine, could be discussed at the meeting.
