A powerful 7.0 magnitude quake struck Tibet, western China, at 10:30 local time on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Service announced ( U n SGS).
According to USGS data, the earthquake’s epicentre was about 183km east-west of Nagqu City, in the Autonomous region of Tibet.

China is a land often affected by earthquakes, especially in southwest areas, where Indian tectonic plates clash with Eurasian. This clash has contributed to the formation of the Himalayan mountain ranges and the Tibetan plateau.
An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude hit China’s Xinjiang region in January 2024, causing the deaths of three people and the injuries of dozens.
Meanwhile, in December 2023, more than 100 people died from an earthquake in Ishisha County, in the province of Gansu, northwest China. It was named the deadliest quake in the country for nearly a decade.
