Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan called for reforms that would make the UN Security Council more just and comprehensive, stressing the need to strengthen the organisation’s ability to cope with global crises.
In a message with the UN Day case and the organisation’s 81st anniversary, published by Turkey’s Communications Directorate on the Turkish Social platform NSosyal, Erdogan said the UN founding mission remains increasingly important in the face of global challenges.
It has become especially important to create a more just and comprehensive structure of the UN Security Council, which can respond to the international community’s expectations, he said.
Erdogan cited ongoing wars, humanitarian disasters, climate change, hunger, poverty, racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia as challenges proving the continued importance of the UN.
He said the organisation, founded after two world wars to save future generations from the war disaster, has taken on important responsibilities for maintaining international peace and security, as well as promoting development and prosperity.
Referring to Gaza, Erdogan said the death of more than 74,000 people, along with conflicts in other countries, testifies to the urgency of reforms.
He urged countries to more strongly respect the UN Charter and support reforms aimed at boosting the effectiveness of the organisation’s key bodies.
Erdogan also reaffirmed Turkey’s support for the UN80 Initiative, launched by Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
We are working in close co-operation with the organisation towards our goal of making Istanbul a UN centre, he said.
Congratulating UN personnel worldwide, Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s determination to support efforts towards a more efficient and inclusive international system. / AA/
