Health Minister Arben Vitita has criticised a journalist and medium where she works in connection with reporting the death of a cancer patient who had allegedly changed his life due to a lack of drugs.
During discussions in the Kosovo Assembly, where he was responding to LDK deputy Janina Ymeri, Vitita declared that the cause of death cannot be determined without proper medical procedures. According to him, the news was published without confirmation by the association that had originally made the case public without contact with health institutions.
Let me first express my heartfelt condolences to family members and the circle of feeling, dear citizens, and let me tell you at short points what happened behind: An association makes a status that says that a patient has died because of a lack of medication. The oncology clinic makes an effort to contact this association, initially impossible, then a journalist without making any confirmation of the news, so much for multiple confirmations, without making any confirmation of the news, neither do we present immediately, even in the central news of a medium. Imagine honourable citizens, dear MPs, due to death there is a need for autopsy and many other procedures to be clear, he said.
The minister expressed his condolences for the family of the deceased patient while showing that after publishing the announcement by the association, the Oncology Clinic had tried to provide more information on the case.
He said that determining the cause of death requires a physical medical process and that, according to him, such an outcome cannot be drawn from just one publication on social networks.
Even a doctor can’t ascertain the cause of death in such cases. It takes a series of procedures to come up with the findings, while the journalist is seen not only by the journalist, but also by others, come out and make it a status that has been on Facebook. So, to be clear once again, the journalist has followed no process of verifying the news with the association or questions, that is, the association, without their question for institutions. It seems, either inclined to do more clicks to make news, or maybe it’s been postponed, by someone else, that I’m sure it wouldn’t have made the news by itself without publicly confirming the news, whether with the association or with the institutions, as we saw today, even in the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo, to be worse, that the preliminary speaker actually has and family doctors who had to market it as the cause of death, Vitita declared.
Vitia also raised doubts about how the case was handled in the media, claiming the reporting was made without necessary verifications.
According to the minister, the director of the Oncology Clinic after collecting information on the case, he had published an official reaction to clarify the situation.
However, Vitita criticised the media that had initially reported on the case, claiming he had not published the health institution’s response, unlike other media that had distributed it.
The minister’s statements were made in response to MP Janina Ymer’s criticism of the cancer patient’s case and the issue of lack of drugs.
