Israel’s elections without any determining result, Netanyah, and his rival do not secure parliamentary majority

Israel’s first national elections since Hamas’ attack on 7 October 2023 have ended without a determining result, leaving the country in the face of political uncertainty. Voter exit polls suggest neither of the two main political blocs has secured the necessary majority to form the government.

Projects published by leading Israeli televisions show that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc nor that of its main rival, former army chief Gadi Eisencott, have managed to secure the 61 seats needed for the parliamentary majority in Knesset.

The unclear result is expected to extend the process of political negotiations, while forming the new government may require weeks of talks among parties.

Meanwhile, preliminary results show that the right-wing has marked decline in relation to campaign expectations. At the headquarters of the far right party Otzma Yehud (Hebrew Power), led by Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, the silence prevailed after TV projections gave the party only about six or seven mandates.

That result would be considerably lower than that of past elections, when the alliance had won 14 mandates.

) I don’t have words. I hope they’re wrong, polls always change, but I know you have to be realistic, said Ran Levy, a Ben-Gvir activist.

However, projections based on exit polls are not final results and could be changed during the ballot count.

Experts warn that these polls could contain errors, so the new composition of the Knesset and the final balance of political forces will be determined only after publishing official results.
