Serbia Elections Big Challenge for Vuciqi Power

According to Reuters news agency, these elections pose the biggest challenge to Vuciqi’s power in more than a decade.

The votes are held after months of mass protests led by students, who seek to fight corruption, institutional responsibility and political changes in the country.

Protests began after the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station in 2024, where 16 people died. Since then, the student movement has gained broad support among citizens.

However, the election race is expected to be tight. Polls cited by Reuters produce different results, with Vuciqi’s party taking advantage of some of them, while others favour candidates supported by students.

In addition to fighting corruption and improving education, students aim at changing the political system. On the other hand, Vuciqi relies on promises of increased wages and pensions, investments in infrastructure and continued economic development.

The election outcome is expected to have significant impact on Serbia’s political future, as well as on its relations with the European Union.

Reuters notes that despite continuing discontent and protests, Vuciqi remains a figure of great political influence, while the student movement poses the most serious challenge to his power in recent years.
