La Repubblica: Mellon could resign after EU Council meeting

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melon may resign in March 2027, following the European Council summit expected to take place in Rome.

That step would lead to early parliamentary elections.

According to a report La RepubblicaThis scenario was discussed by Mellon during recent meetings with its allies in the government, Antonio Tayan, Matteo Salvin and Maurizio Lupi.

According to the report, the European summit in Rome, designed to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of Rome’s Treaty, could serve as the important international moment for prime minister before it is to seek the president of the Republic’s distribution of Parliament and the appointment of early elections.

The first possible date for the vote would be May 16th, 2027, while the scenario considered most likely is holding parliamentary and local elections on the same day during June.

La Repubblica writes that uniting two election processes would be an opportunity to organise early voting, several months before the end of the current parliamentary mandate, expected in autumn 2027.

However, right coalition leaders continue to state publicly that elections will be held in the usual term.

At the moment, there is no official announcement of Melon’s resignation or of the appointment of early elections.

In parallel with discussions on parliamentary elections, the right camp in Italy has accelerated work on selecting candidates for local elections in the country’s main cities.

According to La Repubblica, among the cities where an important race is expected are Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, and Bologna.

The candidate selection has brought discussions within coalition parties, while leaders aim to find an agreement before the election campaign enters the intensive phase.

It further emphasises that developments in the coming months will be crucial to determining the Italian political calendar, while the idea of early elections remains, so far, a scenario reported by the media and not an officially announced decision. /Telegraphy/
