US Professor Edward Joseph has said Kosovo should hold negotiations with the European Union on concerns concerning the Special Court, linking the issue with membership in the Council of Europe.
Speaking at the podcastin SHIKE, in a conversation with Veton Surroi, Joseph said there is an agreement of interests between Kosovo, the European Union and the US administration on reaching an agreement.
According to him, membership in the Council of Europe would enable Kosovo access to the European Court for Human Rights, where relevant issues can be considered within its jurisdiction.
Joseph stressed that such an agreement would not imply avoiding international obligations, but finding solutions through dialogue with international partners.
He named the sentences pronounced by the Special Court as potentially disproportional, but added that he cannot provide a final assessment without considering the evidence.
The American professor requested that the discussion on this issue include the length of judicial processes, court spending, and the comparison of sentences to those of The Hague Tribunal.
The Special Court has sentenced four former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veselin, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi to a total of 81 years in prison.
