The summer of 2026 in Europe, the deadliest: About 50,000 heat victims

The summer of 2026 was the deadliest in Europe by high temperatures, with about 50,000 casualties, reports the DW.

According to the study, about 65 percent of these deaths are directly related to climate change. Research included 854 urban areas in 30 European countries.

Germany was among the most affected countries, with some 16,000 heat victims, while some 4,500 deaths are estimated in Great Britain.

According to researchers, summer temperatures averaged five degrees Celsius higher than the 1991 average period,2020. About 6,000 of the estimated victims were under the age of 65.

Experts stress the need for greater measures to deal with rising temperatures, including increasing green spaces in cities and improving health care.
